History:

Why do we have a tram museum ?

History shapes the present. This also applies to our environment, economics, science, art, trade and industry, to the working sphere and everyday culture. Public transportation is part of this everyday culture: It is a sign of technical development and social achievements, but also reflecting the changes of generations and taste.

Who is backing the museum ?

The association Tram Museum Zurich was chartered in 1967 by 40 tram enthusiasts who had the goal of documenting the history of public transportation in Zurich by saving and restoring historically valuable tramcars. This goal has been achieved in cooperation with Zurich Transport. The present collection represents most types of trams which operated in Zurich over the years. Furthermore, the museum archives have developed into the most important source of local traffic history.

The museum is alive

The museum, established in 1989 in the historical tram depot Wartau in Zurich-Hoengg, is the only one of its kind in Switzerland. On open days, a "museum line" is operated by association members between the main railway station and the tram museum, thus bringing a piece of history back to life. All these achievements were only possible thanks to many members who volunteer a large portion of their own spare time.

We need your support!

The many tasks and responsibilities require a large base (presently there are 800 members). We need your support too! You can be part of preserving an important part of Zurich's history for future generations. Further major restoration projects and the envisioned creation of a larger tram museum need committed members. As a member you will receive interesting information and be able to participate in meetings, lectures and special trips. The publication "TMZ Revue" provides comprehensive information about all activities.

Have an active part yourself!

If you are interested, there is ample opportunity to play an active part in further establishing the Zurich tram museum. For example, you may help with exhibitions, guide museum tours, work as a conductor on the "museum line" or test your skills by doing restoration work on our valuable vehicles. Send us an email - or even better: just show up!
