Most links on this page are unfortunately not available in English. Nevertheless, there are many pictures, which may be worthwhile to look at.

Tramway Companies in Zurich

Horse tram operation

First electric tramway in Zurich

Operations were integrated into the municipal tramways

Municipal tramways

The main route was integrated into the municipal tramways, whereas the branches to Schwamendingen and Glattbrugg were abandoned. ZOS car # 1 is part of the museum collection and Switzerland’s oldest tram in working condition

Operations were integrated into the municipal tramways

Operations were integrated into the municipal tramways. The original tiny Z-H Wartau depot was re-activated in 1989 and today houses the tram museum.

This company never had a track connection with the Zurich tramways. One single car served as a connection between the funicular terminus and the Dolder Grand Hotel.

At the time this was mainly an interurban operation. The branches to Weiningen and Dietikon were abandoned and the main route to Schlieren integrated into the municipal tramways (cut back in 1955 to Altstetten). LSB car # 2 survived and is part of the museum collection.

During its existence as a private company, operations were – due to lack of patronage - often limited to summer Sundays. Nowadays it has become one of the busiest routes of the municipal system.

The Forchbahn provides interurban service from Zürich to Esslingen and uses municipal tracks within the city limits. Over the years it has been upgraded from very basic street running into a most modern line on private right of way.

Cable and rack lines in Zurich

Connects the city with the university. The line has been modernized, but maintains its historic design as a funicular.

The Dolderbahn was a funicular with a connecting (one car) tramway to the Dolder Grand Hotel. The line was extended in 1973 and transformed to rack operation.

The original funicular has been replaced with an automatically operated modern cable car system.

Tramways, which used to have a track connection with with Zurich

This line was transformed from street running into a modern interurban railway. The track connection with Zurich was lost with the elimination of the LSB tracks to Dietikon.

Abandoned interurban lines with a track connection to Zurich

An example of the original bogie cars has been restored by the Zurich Tram Museum and is on display at the present bus company headquarters in Grüningen.

This line connected between the Wetzikon-Meilen Bahn and the still existing Forchbahn.
