Tram and bus

The year 1927 saw the introduction of buses to complement the existing tramway network. In addition, trolleybuses were introduced in 1939 as a third form of public transportation. Especially on hilly routes (such as route 34 to Witikon) the trolleybus retains its advantages up to this day. In an effort to fight pollution, bus routes 46 and 72 have only recently been transformed at great cost to electric operation. Since the early days, tram and bus have always complemented each other and only once in 1954, tram tracks (route 1) were abandoned in favor of bus operation (route 31), a move that has been regretted ever since. Throughout the history of public transportation, the city of Zurich has made sure that radial routes were operated by tram.

Who are we ?

The association "Historical Zurich Buses (HZB)" was chartered in 1993 and – similar to its sister organization "Tram Museum Zurich" – contributes much effort to preserving and restoring historic motor- and trolleybuses to operating condition. There is a close cooperation with Zurich Transport as well as a valued partnership with the Tram Museum Zurich. This enables regular operating days with historic trams as well as buses. The HZB association has its own book and souvenir shop and its members volunteer many hours towards the restoration of historical buses.
